The automobile discovery has thoroughly revolutionised the world of transport.  Automotive links are spread throughout the world. In ancient times people covered great distances either through the sea or used animals like horses and camels to move from one place to the other. Such means were not only time consuming but were tiring for the rider as well. With the discovery of automobiles covering great distances have become much easier. This was made possible by Nicholas-Joseph Cugnot. In this car, steam engines attached to wagons were used. Such engines were bulky and posed great difficulty in controlling the vehicle. After considerable research and years of hard work the experts came up with a mechanism that was to change the way the engines of the automobiles were to be run. This mechanism was called the internal combustion engine. With the extraction of oil gaining momentum owing to increased economic growth worldwide, the internal combustion engine became very popular. In this mechanism, air and petrol in a definite proportion was allowed to explode inside a cylinder. The energy generated by this process was supposed to push the piston down and hence turn the wheel.

Though hard to ascertain, yet Karl Benz is called as the inventor of modern automobile. He is credited for using a four stroke engine for the first time in his vehicle. His sold such cars in 1988.
