Smith machines are used in weight training. They consist of a barbell that is constrained to move only vertically upwards and downwards on runners. Behind each runner is a series of slots on which the barbell can be hooked. When using a Smith Machine, the barbell cannot fall forwards, backwards or sideways, and they are therefore considered safer to use than an ordinary barbell. Exercises using a Smith Machine: The Smith machine can be used for any barbell exercise in which the barbell moves vertically up and down, such as the squat or the bench press. It is not suitable for exercises in which the barbell moves in an arc, such as the biceps curl, however a large number of exersices are possible on our Marcy machines, which have a number of extras built around a Smith machine core. An obvious difference between our Multigym Range and our Smith Machines is that, while the multigyms come with their own weigh stacks, the Smith Machines do not.
